Ripping is an alternative to drilling and blasting method in open pit mines.However, application of this method is limited by the strength of the rock to be ripped.For example , igneous rock can not to be ripped easily because they are very hard and do not have beddings.If the rock is easily fractured by the ripper, it is better to use two or three teeth.
Bucket whell excavators are the largest and most complicated open pit excavating machines.They are also,under favorable conditions,the most productive machines.They dig continously and are capable of high production rates.Bucket wheel excavators can only dig soft materials and they have very high capital costs.
UNDERGROUND HAULAGE
One of the most important factors in the efficient operation of an underground mine is the haulage system.
The determining factor between profitand loss quick removal of are and waste from the working places to main haulage roads.Also,men and supplies must be transported in a rapid but safe manner.
The choice of underground haulage equipment should meet the necessary safety requirements.

Main –Line and Secondary Haulage :
Today; many mines use a combination of belt and rail haulage.Even if a belt system is used to carry the product from face to surface,rail is used to transport men and supplies.
A rail system ,when properly installed,will provide interruption-free and safe haulage.
Mine Cars : Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining.There are various types of mine cars.However,it is practical to standardize on one type.Such an approach will reduce amount of spare parts necessary to stock.Bottom-dump cars are used in many mines because of dumping simplicity.
Flat-bottomed cars are simpler than bottom-dump cars,but they can only be dumped at a tippler.
