Major Operations Of Mining

The three major operations of mining are :

a) Breaking the ore and waste

b) Supporting the excavation.

c) Loading and transporting the ore and waste.

These three operations may not have equal importance in all mining operations.Most underground mines have three additional operations which require considerable attention.These are :

Bucket whell excavators are popular in Europe and in other parts of the world.These machines digs the face at a continous rate.

The muck is loaded on belt conveyors and remove from the mining area.These machines work very well where the overburden is soft,and where blasting is not necessary to break the material.These huge machines are crawler mounted and can move when necessary.

Despite their size,they have a low power consumption(partly because they work in soft materials and partly because they move slow).

The purpose of exploration is to discover new mineral deposits which are suitable for economic production.

In mineral exploration, many techniques are used such as geology and geophysics.

Geology is one of the most important techniques because the success of any exploration depends on the selection of the exploration area.

Geophysics is defined as “the study of the physics of the earth”, and its success requires experienced engineers.

In a proper exploration work,there are hundreds of drillings and thousands of samples.

The three main factors which have to be considered in the choice of mine support materials are safety,length of service and cost.

Wood is usually the cheapest support material , but its short life has to be considered steel is better for support purposes it is stronger than wood.However, when it is bent,does not give an audible warning.

All the supports , except the packs , are withdrawn when the face is advanced.

Ripping is an alternative to drilling and blasting method in open pit mines.However, application of this method is limited by the strength of the rock to be ripped.For example , igneous rock can not to be ripped easily because they are very hard and do not have beddings.If the rock is easily fractured by the ripper, it is better to use two or three teeth.

Bucket whell excavators are the largest and most complicated open pit excavating machines.They are also,under favorable conditions,the most productive machines.They dig continously and are capable of high production rates.Bucket wheel excavators can only dig soft materials and they have very high capital costs.
